Leadership: Fall 2012

Sarah Ralston – President
Sarah Ralston is concentrating in Latin America Studies and Economics with specializations in International Finance and Emerging Markets. She has spent the past four years working at the U.S. Department of the Treasury in both the Financial Management Service and International Affairs Department. Originally from Charlotte NC, she lived in Baltimore, Italy and Mexico before moving to DC.

Annie O’Neill — Executive Vice President

Samuel Lee – VP of Alumni and Company Outreach/Chief Information Officer
Samuel is concentrating in International Law & Organization while pursuing a specialization in International Finance. For his summer internship, Samuel worked in the Investment Banking Division of Credit Suisse Hong Kong as a Summer Analyst on the Technology, Media, and Telecom team. Prior to SAIS, he worked as a research analyst at Taiwan Mergers & Acquisitions and Private Equity Council (MAPECT) – a think tank, based in Taiwan that focused on Cross-Strait M&A and PE. Samuel graduated in 2009 with a B.A. in Biology and International Relations from Tufts University.

Erik Hansen — VP of Programming
Erik Hansen is concentrating in International Finance and International Law. He studied English and political science at the University of Virginia, and served two internships at the Department of State before leaving the country in 2008 to teach in Okayama, Japan. He returned to the United States in 2010 and worked on contracts for the Department of Justice before entering SAIS in 2011. Erik is a creative baker and occasional eating contest champion.

Napat Jatusripitak — VP of Professional Development
Napat is concentrating in China Studies with an emerging market focus and pursuing specializations in International Finance and Quantitative Methods and Economic Theory. He was born and raised in Bangkok, Thailand but he has been in the U.S. since 2004 for high-school and college. Prior to SAIS, he attended Cornell University and received his B.A. in Mathematics and Economics in 2011. While at Cornell, he served as treasurer, event-coordinator, and co-president of Cornell Thai Association. Napat has interned at several public organizations in Thailand, including the Bank of Thailand, the National Economic and Social Development Board, and the Stock Exchange of Thailand. He enjoys playing electric guitar and doing card tricks.

Valerie Gadala-Maria – VP of Networking and Social Events
Valerie is concentrating in Latin American Studies and specializing in International Finance. In addition to her VP position with the Finance Club, she is also the President of the Toastmasters Club at SAIS. Prior to attending SAIS, Valerie worked in Private Wealth Management for Bank of New York Mellon in Miami, FL, her hometown. She received her bachelors degree in Economics and History and a minor in French from the University of Notre Dame. While at Notre Dame, she studied abroad in Angers, France and at the London School of Economics. She is of Peruvian and Salvadoran descent and travels frequently to Latin America.

Bailey Zhang — VP General
Bailey is concentrating in ERE and pursuing a specialization in International Finance. Born in China and raised in Canada, Bailey attended the University of Toronto and received a B.A. in International Relations. Prior to SAIS, Bailey worked in Beijing as an account manager at Renren Inc., a website similar to Facebook and the largest social network company in China. He became interested in the finance sector through working with clients from the industry and would like to pursue a career in investment banking after SAIS.

First-Year Representatives

Jonathan Levine – Jon is concentrating in Energy, Resources, and the Environment and pursuing a specialization in International Finance. Prior to SAIS, he worked as a trading/operations analyst at a proprietary commodities trading firm on their bio-fuels desk. He is originally from Indonesia, but grew up in the Miami, FL area. Jon holds a BA cum laude in economics and sociology from the University of Florida.

Sunny Qian Li

Martin Soler – Martin is concentrating in International Development and pursuing a specialization in International Finance. Prior to SAIS, he worked as an Associate Economist at Moody’s developing and maintaining macroeconomic forecast for countries in Latin America. Martin holds a bachelor’s degree in economics and political science from Temple University in Philadelphia. He is originally from Uruguay and speaks Spanish and Portuguese fluently.

Nick Steele – Nick is concentrating in China Studies and International Economics with a specialization in International Finance. He has spent the past six years working at the Capital Group in both investment research and operations. He has also held leadership roles in microfinance with the Grameen Foundation and venture philanthropy with the Los Angeles Social Venture Partners.  He is an advocate for impact investing and social enterprise as a Founding Member of the Hub LA and DC Board member of the Startingbloc Institute for Social Innovation. He is originally from Los Angeles, but has also spent time working and going to school in Hong Kong and Shanghai.

Kunfan Tang – Kunfan (Richard) is concentrating in China Studies and pursuing a specialization in International Finance. Prior to attending SAIS, he served as an assistant analyst at Great Wisdom (Dazhihui), a Bloomberg-like information provider in Shanghai. Kunfan received his B.A in economics at East China University of Science and Technology, where he was also a member of the Finance Club there. He is interested in China’s financial reform and its integration into the global market.

Second-Year Advisors

Fentress Boyse – Fentress is concentrating in International Finance and Energy, Resources and the Environment. Fentress is a joint BA/MA student and four year recipient of the Hodson Trust Merit Scholarship at Johns Hopkins University. Prior to SAIS, he worked at Citigroup Global Markets Inc. in New York where he served as Summer Analyst in Latin American Credit Markets.

Wil Goldenberg

Lauren Goodwin – Lauren Goodwin is concentrating in International Law and specializing in International Finance. Prior to SAIS, Lauren worked with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in marketing and youth engagement strategies. She has also provided business skill assistance in rural Nicaragua. Following graduation, she would like to pursue opportunities in market entry strategy and business intelligence. A graduate of the University of Southern California, Lauren is an active triathlete and cycling coach.

Jim Pearse – Jim is a dual-degree student, having graduated in 2011 with a certificate from the Hopkins-Nanjing Center in Nanjing, China. He is currently completing his M.A. at the DC campus with concentrations in China Studies and International Finance. Previously, he worked for the Center for Strategic and International Studies in DC and the US-China Business Council in Shanghai, China conducting research in international business and finance. Jim, a native of Boston, graduated in 2010 from the Johns Hopkins University with a B.A. in Public Health and Economics.
