SIFC First-Year Representative Application Open
We are looking to recruit our new First-Year Representatives for the 2018-2019 school year and bring them onboard in September. First-Year Representatives will help organize workshops, panels and networking events. Students interested in a career in International Finance are encouraged to apply. Recent Finance News 

U.S. Extends NAFTA Renegotiation Deadline in Hopes of Deal with Canada 
While U.S. reached a deal with Mexico on NAFTA renegotiation on Monday and hoped to pressure Canada to join by the end of the week, the renegotiation with Canada stalled out on Friday. The remaining differences lie in the agreement’s dispute resolution system, the dairy industry, and cultural protection.
 
Central Bank of Argentina Raises Interest Rates to 60%
After talks of payment acceleration for Argentina’s $50 bn IMF package spooked the market, theCentral Bank of Argentina stepped-in to raise rates to 60%, from 45%. The peso has depreciated by 53% this year, becoming the worst performing major currency outside of Venezuela.
 
U.K. Prime Minister May Says No Second Referendum and No Backing Down
PM May refused calls for a second referendum, calling it a betrayal to U.K.’s democracy and trust. She also doubled down that she will not give in on her Brexit plans when negotiating with the EU despite the increasing risk of a ‘no deal’ after the U.K. leaves the EU and the transition period begins on March 29, 2019. EU’s Chief Negotiator Barnier says EU will offer unprecedented deal, but single market cherry picking will not be allowed.  
 
The Week Ahead
The U.S. jobless claims data and EIA reports come out next week. Many FOMC members such as, Evans, Williams, Kashkari, Bostic, Mester, Kaplan and Rosengren will speak next week, which may provide clues to FOMC’s policy ahead of the September 25 meeting. Internationally, PMI data will be reported in major economies in the EU and in China.
