Week Ahead:
Trump will deliver his speech to Congress on Tuesday. Treasury secretary Mnuchin indicated that the President wants to push a tax reform by August. Analysts at TD Securities indicated that comments suggesting cooperation with Republican representatives could result in a strengthening of the markets.
The Fed will publish its Beige Book comprised of a report on the state of the Economy in the US with the collaboration of its 12 regional branches. The investors will be paying close attention to the “Book” to get updated signs of inflation, and labor market slack. This week we will also receive updates on economic growth, manufacturing and trade.

Market Update:
The announcement of a “fairly soon” increase in interest rates did not stop investors from buying more US equities. Investors increased their bets on a European recovery, and money have been flowing to Emerging Market funds.  Commodity prices have been increasing as well, which pushed mining companies to profit again.
Activity in the US demonstrated stronger than expected. Surveys show that business activity is at its 6 year peak in the Eurozone. This optimism in the markets may be the result of lower corporate tax and a more relax regulation policy promise by President Trump.

Risk Analysis & Modeling: Deloitte Decisions, Federal Advisory

Time & Location: BOB 500 at 6PM, Monday, February 27th

Join Professor White’s Risk Analysis & Modeling class on Monday, February 27th, as the class will be inviting Anna Sarnek (’16) and Ed Moe (’16) who both work at Deloitte Decisions, a group in Deloitte’s Federal Advisory practice. They will be coming to SAIS to talk about the work that they are doing and will share their thoughts on how SAIS students with interests in areas like risk and decision analysis can prepare for potential work in advisory/consulting positions.

Anna and Ed plan to provide an overview of modeling and decision analytics consulting projects with the Federal government, give examples of the types of project questions faced by their team, and discuss the skills and knowledge from SAIS that can be useful in this type of work. The event will not require RSVP and this event is not sponsored by Deloitte.

Off-Campus Events

March 2, 2017 4:00PM to 5:30PM, Business and the Roberts Court: Is the Supreme Court “pro-business?” That’s a claim often heard from critics of the Roberts Court, now circulating once more amid a likely battle over the confirmation of a successor to the late Justice Antonin Scalia. But what does the claim mean? Does it charge the Court with ruling wrongly in favor of business litigants, with shaping legal doctrine in unprincipled ways, or with something else? In Business and the Roberts Court, Professor Jonathan Adler assembles essays from scholars who consider how and whether Roberts Court decisions can or cannot be fairly deemed favorable to business.
