Apr. 13: “Subsidies to the Global Financial Sector” – Irving Mintzer, Professor and Visiting Research Scholar, will discuss the topic. The SAIS UNEP Team has been developing an estimate of global fiscal support provided to the private financial services sector. The estimate accounts for the full range of direct and indirect fiscal support, including incentives for savings and pensions, bank deposits insurance, implied support for large banks, and tax structure that encourage investment in various assets and trading activities. Apr. 15: “Asia-Pacific Economic Outlook” – Changyong Rhee, Director of Asia and Pacific Department, IMF will discuss this topic. Wednesday, 12:30pm. BOB 500. Members of SAIS community should RSVP here. This event is off the record.


Apr 16: “Eurozone at a Crossroads (Again): A Conversation with Wolfgang Schäuble” – What are the next steps in the European project? Will it go forward or backward? What will happen to Greece? What is Germany’s role as the strongest and biggest economy in Europe? What is it doing to spur investment and growth? What must other European economies do to promote growth and cohesion in Europe in today’s global context? Wolfgang Schäuble, who has been Germany’s finance minister since 2009 and is at the center of current economic policy conversations, will discuss key economic policy issues in Germany and in Europe at the Brookings Institution on Thursday, April 16.This event is sponsored jointly by the Brookings Institution’s Center on the United States and Europe, Global Economy and Development program, and Hutchins Center on Fiscal and Monetary Policy. Brookings President Strobe Talbott will introduce Minister Schäuble. Following Schäuble’s remarks, he will be joined in conversation by David Wessel and Kemal Derviş, vice president and director of Global Economy. Apr. 16: “Finance Minister Dar on the Revival of Pakistan’s Economy”– While Pakistan’s economy has made strides in recent years, the government continues to deal with very real setbacks, including energy challenges that have hindered fast-paced recovery. If the Pakistan economy is able to continue growing, it could be an ideal time for a number of key reforms in tax structures, as well as the privatization of particularly costly state-owned enterprises. Finance Minister of Pakistan Mohammad Ishaq Dar will unveil his strategy to bring economic growth to par with other emerging economies in the region over the next three years. Carnegie’s Frederic Grare will serve as a discussant, and Carnegie’s George Perkovich will moderate. For more information click here.

Apr. 16: “Euro Growth Conversation Series: Getting Europe Back to Growth” – As a part of the Atlantic Council’s EuroGrowth Conversation Series , Commission Vice President Dombrovskis will discuss the current situation across the Eurozone, the future of the Economic and Monetary Union, the economic impact of the ongoing crisis in Ukraine, and how the EU plans to boost smart, inclusive, and sustainable growth in the years ahead. The EuroGrowth Conversation Series is a recurring discussion series at the Atlantic Council analyzing the prospects for European economic recovery and a forum for new and innovative ideas to be shared among leading policymakers, academic, and the private sector. For more information click here.
