–Your SAIS International Finance Club Leadership

Feb. 9: “Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) & Infrastructure Financing in Latin America” – Alejandro Olivo, associate managing director, Public, Project and Infrastructure Finance Group, Moody’s de México will discuss this topic. Monday, 12:45pm. Nitze 517. Members of SAIS community should RSVP at jmcgeoch@jhu.edu.

Feb. 12: “ASEAN Economic Cooperation and the Asia-Pacific Future– ASEAN has ambitious plans to complete a single market and production base under the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) by the end of this year. In addition, it plays a key role in leading the proposed Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, or RCEP and four of its members are involved in the Transpacific Partnership (TPP) negotiations, with a deal that might be forthcoming in the spring. This talk will address how internal economic integration within ASEAN fits in with the RCEP/TPP “mega-regionalism” and how the latter movement affects ASEAN integration and “centrality” in the future. Michael G. Plummer, Ph.D. Director, SAIS Europe and Eni Professor of International Economics, The Johns Hopkins University will discuss this topic. Thursday, 4:30 PM. Rome 806. Members of the public and media should RSVP at reischauer@jhu.edu.

Feb. 12: “MENA Chief Economist Seminar Series: “Sovereign Wealth Funds, Domestic Investment and Fiscal Rules” by Alan Gelb – The recent decline in world oil prices highlights the difficulties faced by oil exporting countries in the long-term management of their uncertain rents. The presentation will consider different approaches to this question, including the implications of uncertain reserves as well as the tension between traditional “permanent income” fiscal rules and increasing calls for Sovereign Wealth Funds to invest in domestic infrastructure. No approaches are risk-free but efforts can be made to mitigate some risks through appropriate spending, investment and institutional rules. For more information, click here.

Feb. 13: “Falling Oil Prices: Assessing the Economic, Political, and Geopolitical Impact” – The price of world crude oil has plunged more than 50 percent since July 2014. The price drop has spawned predictions of job losses and financial collapse for America’s booming oil and shale industry, as well as a renaissance for U.S. manufacturing and a new burst of prosperity for consumers. Warnings of the doom of OPEC and international ‘Big Oil’ have been balanced by forecasts that cheap oil’s boost to economic growth around the world will trigger a renewed price rise in the future. To address what a new era of $50-60 a barrel oil will mean for the world’s global balance of energy power, Hudson Institute will host a panel of experts. For more information, click here
