Oct. 16: “Starved for Profit or Choking on Regulation?” – Featuring: Robert Adams, Senior Economist, Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System and Visiting Senior Policy Scholar, Georgetown Center for Business and Public Policy. The number of new bank charters in the United States has declined dramatically in recent years.  From 1990 to 2008, 1,850 new banks were formed, a rate of nearly 100 per year.  From 2010 to 2013 only 6 new banks were formed, a rate of fewer than 2 per year.  Most industry observers seem to believe that regulatory burden is responsible for the decline, including new FDIC regulations and the 2010 Dodd Frank Act. Using U.S. data from 1975 to 2013 we explore how much of the decline, without any regulatory shift following the financial crisis, may have been the product of the weak economy and low interest rate environment. Thursday 12:30 pm – 2:00 pm. Georgetown Center for Business & Public Policy. For more information click here
