April 23: “Russia, Ukraine, and Trade” – Russia’s takeover of Crimea has forced an urgent review of the commercial and economic options that Western countries can use to respond. Some of the issues will be explored on the talk include: What is the United States’ objective in Ukraine? Do sanctions hurt Europe and the United States more than they impair Russia? Russia’s GDP is the size of Italy’s ($2.1 trillion), and less than one-seventh of the size of the United States’ ($15.7 trillion). Can it sustain an expansionist foreign policy that must underwrite crippled economies? When can U.S. exports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) begin to affect global supply and reduce reliance on Russian exports? Will the Crimea experience give a new impetus to the stuttering Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership? Ultimately, will Putin have made a strategic mistake, one that puts Russia at odds with the West and calls into question the long effort to bring Russian fully into global economic institutions like the WTO? Wednesday 12:00 pm – 1:30 pm. Rayburn House Office Building. For more information click here

April 24: “Too Big To Fail: Can Fixing Capital Requirements End it?” – Is the too big to fail problem still with us? Has the implementation of key Dodd-Frank provisions lessened the probability banks will fail? Are new bank capital requirements ideally suited to promote financial safety? Will Dodd-Frank’s systemic resolution authority fix too big to fail? Join the Heritage Foundation as leading experts address these and other important questions. Thursday 10:30 am – 12:00 pm. Heritage Foundation. For more information click here
