Feb 19: Lunch event at AEI on the Dodd-Frank Act – AEI is hosting a book launch/panel discussion for Peter Wallison’s new book, “Bad History, Worse Policy: How a False Narrative about the Financial Crisis Led to the Dodd-Frank Act”. The panel of top banking policy and regulatory experts will include Wayne Abernathy, a SAIS alumnus who was a key figure in the banking legislation in the Senate during the late 1990s and early 2000s (including Gramm-Leach-Bliley). Feb 19: Speech given by Chairman of the SEC  – AU Washington College of Law is hosting a speech given by Elisse B. Walter, the 30th Chairman of the SEC, on “Harnessing Tomorrow’s Technology For Today’s Investors and Markets”. The speech will address the SEC’s embrace of cutting-edge technology to significantly upgrade its oversight and enhance investor protection, while providing a unique understanding of today’s complex and blindingly fast markets. Feb 19: ‘Rethinking Money: How New Currencies Turn Scarcity into Prosperity’ – monetary expert Bernard Lietaer and award winning journalist Jacqui Dunne will present ideas in their new book on how a reconstruction of the money needs to be revisited. Feb 21: Former AIG CEO Maurice R. Greenberg– Greenberg will discuss his experiences as CEO of two of the world’s top insurance companies and will offer perspectives regarding what the modern investor and shareholder can expect in the current financial legal and regulatory climate. Hosted by the National Press Club Newsmakers Committee in the Club’s Zenger Room, National Press Building, 529 14th St. on Thursday at 2:00pm. For more information and register online here.


Feb 18: ‘Private Chinese Investment in Africa: Myths and Realities’– Xiaofang Shen, visiting scholar in the SAIS China Studies Program and former investment climate specialist at the World Bank, will discuss this topic. Monday between 12:00 – 2:00pm in Rome 806. Register here

Feb 20: Perfect Pitch Workshop – If you’ve registered in SAISWorks and attended one of the preparation workshops, get ready to practice your pitch and network with alumni across working in the private, public, non-profit and multilateral sectors. Bring your A game to Kenney at 6:30pm.

Feb 21: ‘Tariff Reductions and Trade Organizations in China’ – Peter Morrow, assistant professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Toronto will discuss this topic. Thursday at 4:30-6:00pm, BOB 714. For more information email Sherry Russo.

Feb 22: ‘The Inside Track- Public/Private Sector Partnerships’ – get the scoop from MIPPs who have been in the trenches on how best to leverage your time at SAIS as you consider careers in areas in which they work now or have in the past. Your peers will answer questions such WHY they chose a certain field, WHAT a SAIS background offers in the form of unique preparation, and HOW to best to use academics to explore pubic/private sector partnership.
