Welcome to the first Weekly Newsletter of 2013! First year students – it’s not too late to get involved in the club leadership, the club will be holding our first leadership meeting of the year this Friday (2/8) from 1:00 – 2:00pm in Nitze 507. See ‘On Campus Events’ below for more details about the upcoming meeting and about joining the Finance Club leadership team.

This Tuesday (2/5) from 6:00pm – 9:30pm, the Finance Club will be screening “The Inside Job”, Academy Award-winning documentary film about the global financial crisis of 2008. Movie night was one of our most popular events last year and Professors Leeds will be leading a discussion following the film. Refreshments will be served for all those who RSVP.

Finally, the club is thrilled to announce that we once again received grant funding from the JHU Alumni Association for the 3rd Annual Finance 101 Lecture Series. Get excited now and keep an eye out for upcoming events.

The club held elections prior to winter break, and we are pleased to welcome the incoming 2013 leadership:

Last semester was a busy and successful one for the Finance Club. We kicked off the semester with Donald Kohn on Macroprudential Regulation and followed up with the Finance Internship Roundtable, Anatomy of a Bank, Careers in Investor Relations, Finance and Consulting Trivia Night, and of course, the hugely popular 2nd Annual Speed Interview Event.

A big thank you to the splendid leadership team behind these great events: Sarah Ralston, Annie O’Neill, Sam Lee, Erik Hansen, Bailey Zhang, Valerie Gadala-Maria, Napat Jatusripitak and the other 1st and 2nd year leaders whose hard work and dedication strengthened the club.

UPCOMING OFF-CAMPUS EVENTS

Feb 6: Wall Street in Washington: The Debt Ceiling Debate – Former President of the World Bank, Robert Zoellick, will be joined by leading economists from BofA Merrill Lynch, Standard & Poors and The Economist for a panel discussion at Bipartisan Policy Center (1225 I Street, NW Suite 1000) on Wednesday from 10:00am – 11:30am. Topics will include the market consequences and practical financial impacts that resulting from default, and the effects that government inaction will have on the domestic and global economy. Feb 7: The Political Economy of Financial Regulation – This event will be hosted by George Washington Law (2000 H Street) on Thursday at 9:30am. For more information click here. Find more details and RSVP here
Feb 8: Is Dodd-Frank Chasing a Ghost? – Hal Scott of Harvard Law School presents analysis of the Lehman Brothers and AIG cases in his new paper, which casts doubt on the validity of an idea that underlies the D-F Act. 12:00 – 3:30pm, American Enterprise Institute (1150 17th Street).

Feb 5: “The Inside Job” – Finance Club is excited to host our rescheduled movie night featuring Professor Leeds who will host the post-movie discussion. Don’t miss your chance to watch the fateful 2009 financial crisis unfold again on screen and delve deeper into relevant topics from regulation to financial innovation. Refreshments will be served for those who RSVP. The event will take place from 6:00 – 9:00pm in BOB 500.

Feb 8: Leadership Meeting – Do you want to be a part of the new Finance Club leadership or just learn more about upcoming events? If you’re a first year student (MIPP and PhD students are also welcome) that wants to take a leading role in shaping the future of the club at SAIS (and have priority consideration for finance career treks in the Fall) – this is your chance. You are invited to join the current leadership board this Friday to discuss our spring agenda. The meeting will take place on Friday from 1:00 – 2:00pm in Nitze 507. A background in finance is not necessary to be part the leadership team. We’re looking for bright, creative, and dedicated students that have an interest in the field and are willing to work as a team to continue raising the profile of finance at SAIS.

Feb 15: Annual JHU Business Plan Competition Submissions Due – The nationally-recognized competition, hosted by the Center for Leadership Education provides an opportunity for students to take a novel idea or innovative technology and develop a business plan based around it. First place wins $6,000! Feb 22: The Inside Track, Public/Private Partnerships – 
Career Services will host SAIS Alumna Maia Daniels (Citigroup/Marriott) who will be discussing how to leverage a SAIS education towards a career working on PPPs. The event will take place from 12:30 – 2:00pm, and participation is limited to the first 25 students to RSVP in SAISWorks.
