The SAIS International Finance Club is excited to announce the start of our Second Annual Finance 101 speaker series. The series aims to address popular topics related to finance at SAIS including, Impact Investing, Personal Finance, pursuing a career in finance with a SAIS degree, and more! We’re announcing the first wave of events now, so mark your calendars. There will be more to come!

February 29: “Brazil’s Outlook in the Context of a Global Economic Slowdown” – WHS is hosting Dr. Otaviano Canuto, Vice President and Head of the Poverty Reduction and Economic Management (PREM) Network at the World Bank from 12:45 – 1:45pm in N517. Professor Roett will moderate the event. Email Jennifer Zurek to RSVP.

March 5: “Finding the Right Finance Job: Personalities and Career Development” – On Monday from 12:30 to 1:30pm, the Finance 101 series kicks off with a presentation by current MIPP student Kay Turner. Kay is a Managing Director (on sabbatical) at Citi. At Citi, she ran the emerging markets fixed income corporate and bank research analyst team focused on Central and Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa credits. Kay will discuss what personality types fit in different jobs within banking and how to think about your own personality as part of your job search. Please RSVP via email. (Location – tbd)

March 16: “Anatomy of a Bank” – From 12:45 – 2:00pm Finance Club will host a Finance 101 presentation by second year students and former Goldman Sachs employees, Jason Loughnane and Sam Duncan. Jason and Sam will help students better understand the various divisions of a bank. They will also discuss barriers to entry for particular positions and what areas students with SAIS degrees have previously targeted with success. Please RSVP via email. (Location – tbd)

March 28: “Personal Finance 101” – Following Spring Break, the Finance 101 series continues from 12:30 – 2:00pm taught by Professor Gordon Bodnar. Professor Bodnar will discuss the basics of personal finance and help students answer the age-old question: “Can I afford to accept this job offer for 40k given my financial obligations?” Noemi Crespo, the Director of Financial Aid will also be on hand to take questions. Additional details forthcoming.


SAIS Professor Pieter Bottelier weighs in on China’s economy in this 2/23 Carnegie Endowment for International Peace article: China’s Surprising Rebalancing Act.

Dean Jessica Einhorn’s wrote a letter-to-the-editor of the Financial Times published on 2/20: “Surely We Have Learnt That Not All Trading is of Social Value”.
